Repetition in A, contextual interpretation

No repetition in A (literal reading→FEGE,EE)

Our variant suggestion

The repetition sign for this section is in A at its end in bar 85, yet its equivalent at the beginning of bar 54 is missing. Taking into account the fact that the decision of repeating an already performed fragment is taken at its end, we consider the final repetition sign to be the decisive indication (the initial sign only specifies from where to start the repetition, which generally does not raise major doubts). Due to this fact, we assume that while writing A, Chopin had on his mind repetition of bars 54-85, yet he forgot to mark it in bar 54 (cf. bar 13, in which in A the sign indicating the beginning of repetition is also missing and bar 38, in which the sign opening the repetition of bars 38-53 was most probably added later in A). However, it does not entirely exclude a possibility of an erroneous placement of the sign in bar 85, particularly considering the fact that FE (→GE,EE) do not feature any repetition sign in these bars, which can be a result of Chopin's proofreading. A possible correction could have also been a result of change of concept concerning this issue.

We give the version of the base source, i.e. FE2, as the main text, with a note indicating a possibility of repetition.
