composition: Op. 10 No 10, Etude in A♭ major

The version of FE1 is a result of the engraver's mistake in determining the range of the octave sign, which ends one quaver too early in this edition. Both in FE2 and in EE the error was corrected. In GE this sixth, also written with an octave sign, is actually on the correct pitch, yet the octave sign erroneously includes also the next quaver. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: EE revisions , Errors in FE , Errors in GE , Authentic corrections of FE |

A lacking before the penultimate quaver is most probably a mistake by Chopin. The accidental was added by the revisers in both GE and EE. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: EE revisions , Omissions to cancel alteration , GE revisions , Errors of A |

The cautionary before e2 at the beginning of bar 14 was added in the proofs of FE (→GE,EE). We also complement a corresponding accidental in an analogous place in bar 10. category imprint: Differences between sources; Editorial revisions issues: Cautionary accidentals , Authentic corrections of FE |

b. 13

composition: Op. 10 No 10, Etude in A♭ major

The lack of naturals before the sixth on the 6. quaver is an undoubted oversight by Chopin in A (→FE). The before the upper note was complemented in both GE and EE, however the one sharpening d2 to d2 was only added in GE2 (→GE3→GE4). The lack of the latter accidental also infuences the pitch of the penultimate quaver of the bar. This inaccuracy was noticed during the proofreading of FE (→GE,EE) where a was added before that quaver. category imprint: Interpretations within context; Differences between sources issues: EE revisions , Accidentals in different octaves , GE revisions |

Both versions may be considered as justified here, both from the musical and source point of view. In the version of A Chopin avoids tripling the leading tone g1. The version of FE (→GE,EE) may be considered as accepted by Chopin, who introduced changes, among others, exactly in this bar (pedalling) while proofreading FE. The accompaniment's figure in this version has a similar scheme to the figures in the preceding bar and is identical to the figure used in bar 8. In the main text we adopt the version of the base source, i.e. FE. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Errors in FE , Terzverschreibung error |
