Fingering in A (→FEGE)

EE

In A (→FEGE) Chopin gave the fingering of the basic figure in the L.H. at the beginning of the Etude, certainly as a model for the next bars (until bar 16). In the subsequent part of the piece, where the changing span of intervals requires modification of this basic scheme, he suggested relevant changes by adding single digits in a proofreading of FE (→GE). In a few places – bars 37, 45 and 48 – also the basic pattern is recalled. The fingering for the R.H. was added only in bar 22.

At the time of developing fingering for EE, Fontana considered Chopin's hints to be inaccurate and completed them in numerous places, mostly repeating a few times the hints Chopin had written only once. Only in a few places the fingering added in EE is not obviously following from the composer's indications (bars 22, 25, 27-28, 50-51 and 65-67). In the entire Etude, Fontana's additions are to be found in bars 1-5, 9, 20-28, 32, 37-45, 50-51, 53, 57-63 and 65-67.
