Three-note chord in A (→EE,GCGE)

Octave in FE

..

The octave in FE is most probably a result of an oversight of the engraver of FE1, although the missing completion of the middle note in later proofreadings may be perplexing. It is even more puzzling considering the fact that both in FE2 and in FE3 corrections were made in this bar and on this stave – in FE2 it was the octave sign that was corrected, while FE3 added flats lowering e2(3) to e2(3) and a3 to a3. In spite of that, the most plausible explanation of the missing middle note in this octave is, according to us, an error, and sanctioning it supplements in FE3 constitute a strong argument for at least partial non-authenticity of the changes introduced in this edition.

Slur in A (→EE,GCGE)

..

The slur in FE, unbroken despite rests and pause, is most probably erroneous.

b. 92

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

..

In A (→GC,EE) the middle note a1 on the 2nd beat of the R.H. is assigned to the middle voice. Recognising such division into voices, the revisers of FE and GE shortened the value of this note by deleting the extending dot. No repetition of a1 on the last quaver (cf. bar 94) indicates rather the necessity to sustain this note to the end of the bar, in accordance with the notation of A. Therefore, in the main text we correct the illogical in this situation division into voices, following similar bars 38 and 40. At the time of writing this chord, Chopin could have thought about bar 94, which could have caused the mistake.

One slur in FE

..

The slurring in A in bars 95-97, similarly as in the previous bars, was misrepresented by the copyist and engravers – in GC and EE the slur from bar 95 does not reach bar 96, and in FE the overlapping slurs were interpreted as one slur. In GE the ending of a tenuto slur in bar 97 was misinterpreted by extending it towards the first chord in bar 98.

Slurs in A, contextual interpretation

One slur in FE

One slur in GC(→GE)

Slurs in EE

..

Bar 99 is the last bar on page what caused errors in the notation of slurs in both manuscripts. A lacks the ending of slur in bar 100 although the end of the slur in bar 99 clearly indicates it should continue, and GC (→GE) lacks the slur beginning in bar 98 completely. In EE, the notation of A was recreated quite faithfully by leadng the slur up to the first note in bar 100. The continuous slur in FE is almost certainly the engraver's invention – Chopin did not proofread FE1. However, it seems possible that Chopin accepted the mergence of slurs both here, and in the subsequent bars. In the main text we keep the separate slurs of A, complementing the first with the omitted fragment at the beginning of bar 100.
