Issues : Authentic corrections of GE
b. 256
|
composition: Op. 42, Waltz in A♭ major
..
The version of FE0 (→EE) with g2 as the bottom note of the first of the pairs of the quavers is most probably erroneous. In the base text to FE and in FEG (→GE) Chopin changed this g2 to f2, yet in FE the correction was misunderstood, hence the flat was also copied, which resulted in a f2. Chopin corrected this new error in FEJ. In this situation, the presence of the original version in EE must be considered as a result of an oversight of proofreading or the engraver's inattention. In the main text we give the text written by Chopin's hand in FEG and FEJ. category imprint: Interpretations within context; Differences between sources; Corrections & alterations issues: Annotations in teaching copies , Errors in FE , Authentic corrections of FE , Annotations in FEJ , Authentic corrections of GE |

The staccato dot written by Chopin in FEG may be ambiguous: it is not known whether it concerns the octave in the R.H. in bar 261 or the octave in the L.H. in the great stave right above it, in bar 256. It may be the reason explaining why the sign was not included in GE1 (→GE2→GE3). The sign included in EE is also not entirely clear – in spite of the fact that it resembles a wedge, it has a dot in its structure. Therefore, it is hard to conclude what was written in Chopin base text to EE; hence to the main text we adopt a staccato dot, written by Chopin's hand in FEG. category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Differences between sources issues: Authentic corrections of GE , Wedges , Authentic corrections of EE |

The d1-e1 second, present in FE, is the original version – in FEG (→GE) Chopin added to it a g1. EE also features the completed version with the d1-e1-g1 chord. Therefore, the fact of leaving FE in the original version must be considered as Chopin's oversight. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Accompaniment changes , Authentic corrections of GE , Authentic corrections of EE |

Chopin added the indications in bar 269 and in bar 273 in FEG (→GE). In the remaining sources, FE and EE, the dynamic marks in the ending of the piece appear only in bar 277. category imprint: Differences between sources; Corrections & alterations issues: Authentic corrections of GE |
