Issues : Errors in FE

composition: Op. 42, Waltz in A♭ major

In FE0 (→FE,FEG→GE1) the change of the clef was overlooked. It is possible that the engraver wrote here a quaver rest by mistake instead of the required bass clef, as in FE the 3rd chord in the L.H. is a crotchet (see: the previous note). The clef was introduced already in GE2 (→GE3), EE also has the correct notation. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Errors in FE , Errors in GE |

There are no accidentals before the 2nd chord of the bar in FE0 (→FEG). This patent inaccuracy was corrected in FE1 (partially, as only a before b2 was added) and in GE1 and EE (both necessary naturals). In GE2 (→GE3) the third before e2 was added. category imprint: Interpretations within context; Differences between sources issues: Errors in FE , Accidentals in different octaves , GE revisions , Omission of current key accidentals , Authentic corrections of FE , Authentic corrections of GE , Authentic corrections of EE |

In FE0 (→FE,FEG) there is no lowering g to g. It was the reviser of GE1 (→GE2→GE3) that added the necessary sign. The correct version is also in EE. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Errors in FE , Accidentals in different octaves |

The version of FE0 (→EE) with g2 as the bottom note of the first of the pairs of the quavers is most probably erroneous. In the base text to FE and in FEG (→GE) Chopin changed this g2 to f2, yet in FE the correction was misunderstood, hence the flat was also copied, which resulted in a f2. Chopin corrected this new error in FEJ. In this situation, the presence of the original version in EE must be considered as a result of an oversight of proofreading or the engraver's inattention. In the main text we give the text written by Chopin's hand in FEG and FEJ. category imprint: Interpretations within context; Differences between sources; Corrections & alterations issues: Annotations in teaching copies , Errors in FE , Authentic corrections of FE , Annotations in FEJ , Authentic corrections of GE |

Both source versions of the 4th quaver may be authentic, yet each of them may be erroneous:
According to us, there are a few more arguments for a single note in this place, yet they are not conclusive. Therefore, in the main text we suggest a variant solution. category imprint: Interpretations within context; Differences between sources issues: EE revisions , Errors in FE , Authentic corrections of EE |
