Issues : Authentic corrections of GE

b. 237

composition: Op. 42, Waltz in A♭ major

in EE, contextual interpretation of FEG

 in FE1

No marking in FE0 (→GE)

..

It is not clear what Chopin wanted to underline with the  mark: a sudden change of the chord at the beginning of the bar or the signal chord motif after the rest. The first possibility is suggested by the composer's entry in FEG (which was, after all, not included in GE) and the notation of EE, while the second one – by the notation of FE. It must be emphasised that even the fact of writing this mark under the rests, as it is in FE, does not exclude its validity from the beginning of the bar (possible examples of using such a manner – the Etude in C major, Op. 10 No. 1, bar 45 or in G, Op. 10 No. 5, bars 34-35).

b. 237

composition: Op. 42, Waltz in A♭ major

..

There are no accidentals before the 2nd chord of the bar in FE0 (→FEG). This patent inaccuracy was corrected in FE1 (partially, as only a  before bwas added) and in GE1 and EE (both necessary naturals). In GE2 (→GE3) the third  before ewas added.

leggiero in GE

Both indications in EE

..

Chopin added the indication leggiero in FEG (→GE) and in the base text to EE, whereas  – in the base text to FE and EE. As each of these indications was written by Chopin in two base texts and in one of them – EE – he wrote both, in the main text we give both indications.

b. 244

composition: Op. 42, Waltz in A♭ major

No mark in FE, GE & EE

Wedge in FEG

Our variant suggestion

..

The wedge written by Chopin in FEG was not included in GE, which is most probably a result of the engraver's inattention. As it is also absent in FE and EE, we leave the inclusion of this indication at the discretion of the performer.

b. 248-249

composition: Op. 42, Waltz in A♭ major

cresc. in bar 248 in FE

cresc. in bar 249 in GE & EE

..

In FE1 the crescendo indication was placed – most probably after the proofreading entry of Chopin – already in bar 238. In the main text we adopt the version of FEG (→GE) and EE
