Issues : Authentic corrections of FE

b. 256

composition: Op. 42, Waltz in A♭ major

g2 in FE0 (→EE)

f2 in FE & GE

..

The version of FE0 (→EE) with g2 as the bottom note of the first of the pairs of the quavers is most probably erroneous. In the base text to FE and in FEG (→GE) Chopin changed this g2 to f2, yet in FE the correction was misunderstood, hence the flat was also copied, which resulted in a f2. Chopin corrected this new error in FEJ. In this situation, the presence of the original version in EE must be considered as a result of an oversight of proofreading or the engraver's inattention. In the main text we give the text written by Chopin's hand in FEG and FEJ.

Different chords in GE3

..

The original version of last two chords, conveyed by FE0 (→FEGGE1GE2), was completed by Chopin with a2 notes in the proofreading of FE1 and in the base text to EE. In turn, in GE3 another addition was introduced, most probably modelled on the progression of chords in the previous bar. However, there are no reasons for possible recognition of this version as authentic.

b. 276-277

composition: Op. 42, Waltz in A♭ major

accel. in FEG & FE, literal reading

accelerando in GE

accelerando in EE

..

According to us, the accel. indication written by Chopin in FEG should be understood as "over the 1st quaver in bar 277" and not "from the last quaver in bar 276". This is how it was understood in GE and this is the interpretation we adopt in the main text. The entry underlying the version of FE must have looked similarly. We develop the abbreviation used by Chopin, which is used less frequently nowadays; GE and EE already include the full indication.
