Slurs

b. 92-95

composition: Op. 42, Waltz in A♭ major

One slur in FEG (literal reading→GE1)

One slur in FEG (interpretation) & EE

No slur in FE

Two slurs in GE2 (→GE3)

..

Chopin added a slur in those bars to FEG, it is also present in EE. Although a fragment of the slur visible on the available photograph reaches only the bar line after bar 94 (on this basis GE1 ends the slur on the last quaver of this bar), the shape of the line nevertheless suggests a continuation into bar 95. In GE2 (→GE3) the slur was prolonged up to bar 95, but also arbitrarily divided into two parts in bar 92. FE does not have any slur in this passage.

b. 103-104

composition: Op. 42, Waltz in A♭ major

FEG has a slur, in spite of this, it was not included in GE1. The mistake was not corrected in GE2 (→GE3) either.

b. 104-105

composition: Op. 42, Waltz in A♭ major

In FE0 (→FE,FEG,EE) the slur already begins on the last chords in the previous bar. In this musical context, i.e. ending one theme and starting a completely new one (see a similar context in bars 164-165, the notation must be considered as a mistake, overlooked and left uncorrected by Chopin in all base texts. A justified revision of the slur was performed (despite lack of Chopin proofreading) in GE1 (→GE2GE3) and this is the version we adopt to the main text.

b. 136-140

composition: Op. 42, Waltz in A♭ major

End of slur in FE0

Prolonged slur in FE1

Two slurs in FEG (→GE) & EE

..

In FE0 the slur ends on the minim. In the base text to FE1 it was corrected by extending the slur to bar 139 (there is a visible trace of deleting the original slur of FE0). There is no reason to doubt the authenticity of this change, yet in FEG Chopin completed the slurring differently, by adding the second slur in bars 136-140. The latter is also in EE, most probably based on the identical Chopin correction of the base text. Therefore, in the main text we give the version with two slurs, written by Chopin twice. The continuous slur of FE, offering greater flexibility as to the choice of phrasing, may be, however, treated equally.
