Semiquavers in AI

Crotchet in A

FE (→GE,EE)

In AI the link between the 1st eight-bar section with the repetition of the phrase which opens the Etude is different from the one we know from the published version. The semiquaver figure of the upper voice is more "etude-like" from the pianistic point of view, particularly if we take into account the original indication of the piece's tempo – Vivace. The crotchet of the final version changes the character of this transition – Chopin withdraws from the fluent transition for the sake of stopping the melodic movement, separating the phrases. Then the idea is developed in the stage of proofreading of FE (→GE,EE), in which the composer significantly changed the performance indications: he provided the crotchet with a long accent and he moved the  mark from bar 8 to bar 9, he also added ritenuto.
