Issues : Annotations in FED

b. 9-10

composition: Op. 10 No 7, Etude in C major

Two accents in A

Long accent in FE (→EE)

Short accent in GE

..

In FE the type of the accent in bar 9 (short or long) is not obvious – in GE it was reproduced as short, in EE – as long. In FE (→GE,EE) the short accent in bar 10 was overlooked. In FED Chopin added a long accent in bar 9, confirming the printed sign.

Chopin added  in FED. According to us, the annotation can be considered as an addition to the dynamic concept of this fragment written in A (→FEGE,EE), therefore, independently from its possible change indicated in the same copy in bars 27-28.

Our variant suggestion

..

Chopin's annotation in FED establishes a different dynamic concept of this transition here. According to us, it is at least equal with the version of A (→FEGE,EE). However, as it cannot be excluded that according to the composer's intention the change was only a suggestion connected with the personality or capabilities of a certain pupil, in the main text we limit ourselves to giving information on this alternative concept.

Long accent in A & FED

 in FE (→GE,EE)

..

The long accent of considerable size over f1, written in A, was reproduced in FE (→GE,EE) as a  mark and referring rather to the R.H. In FED Chopin clearly indicated that he wanted to accentuate f1.

Our variant suggestion

..

Chopin's annotation in FED defines a different dynamic concept of the final passage of the Etude in this place. We give the information on this alternative solution to the version of A (→FEGE,EE) in the main text in the form of an annotation at the bottom of the page.
