Issues : Long accents

Accent in A, literal reading

Accent in A, contextual interpretation

No mark in FE (→GE,EE)

..

It is uncertain whether the accent in A should be interpreted as short, which is indicated by its size, or as long, same as two subsequent in this bar. We give preference to the 2nd interpretation. Omitting the mark in FE (→GE,EE) is almost certainly a mistake, as Chopin's deletion of an accent marking the beginning of a five-element progression seems to be totally unlikely.

Long accents in A

Short accents in GE

Possible short accents in A

..

In FE (→GE,EE) the accents were assigned to the right hand and put over the upper stave. The notation of A is ambiguous in this respect, therefore, in the main text we place the signs between the staves. In GE short accents were used, in accordance with this edition's most frequent manner of reproducing all "accent-like" signs of different length featured in FE. Also in this aspect the notation of A is not entirely unanimous, hence we permit an alternative interpretation of the accents as short.

Our suggestion

..

According to us, the comparison with the accents from the previous bar suggests that both the placement and the kind of accent written in A (FEGE,EE) may be interpreted in two ways, which we include in variant suggestions.

b. 45-47

composition: Op. 10 No 7, Etude in C major

Two long accents in A

 in FE (→GE,EE)

..

According to us, the marks, written in A at the end of bars 45 and 47, should be interpreted as long accents. In FE (→GE,EE) the mark in bar 45 was given a form of  hairpins, while the mark in bar 47 was omitted.

In A the characteristic placement of the sign slightly after the note indicates a long accent. In the editions it was reproduced as a common short accent.
