Slurs in A & FE (→GE1) (literal reading), GE2 (→GE3GE4) & EE

Lack of slurs in bars 40-42 seems to be Chopin's oversight – it is revealed by both the musical context and some graphic features of the slurs of A and FE. In A the bars are written with an octave sign, which Chopin could mistakenly perceive as a slur (it is on the level of the slur from bars 38-39); moreover, the 1st slur in bar 43 suggests a continuation from bar 42 on the previous page. In turn, in FE (→GE1) the end of the slur in bar 39 is led to the bar line, contrary to A, which suggests its continuation in bar 40 in a new line (in the remaining editions the slur was shortened). Taking this into account, in the main text we suggest to add the slurs in a way which could stem from the notation of A, as well as alternative possibilities including also the suggestion of FE

Indications in A

No indications in FE (→GE,EE

Our variant suggestion

Distraction, or perhaps also lack of space, are, according to us, the possible reasons for omitting the dynamic indications in FE (→GE,EE).

End of slur in A, contextual interpretation

Possible reading of slur in A (→FEGE,EE)

..

It is unclear whether according to Chopin's intention the slur of A was supposed to end on the last quaver in bar 43 or reach until the beginning of bar 44. In the main text we adopt the second interpretation.

e1 in chord in A

No e1 in FE (→GE,EE)

..

The lack of e1 in the 2nd L.H. chord is most probably due to difficulties in reading A. In Chopin's autographs, internal chord notes placed on ledger lines are often barely visible. This leads to their presence (or lack of) being hard or even impossible to ascertain. Cf. e.g. Etudes in G Op. 10 No 5, bar 15 or in A Op. 10 No 10, bars 76-77.

No indication in FE (→GE,EE

Our variant suggestion

..

Same as in the case of the remaining indications in bars 43-44, omission of dolcissimo in FE (→GE,EE) does not have to be considered as corresponding to Chopin's intention.
