Slurs in A

Our suggestion

..

The slurs of A in these bars are inaccurate, which was only partially corrected in FE (→GE1). The ambiguity was eliminated in EE and – in a different way – in subsequent GE,s, yet Chopin did not participate in their elaboration. Taking into account analogous bars 14-15, in which Chopin probably corrected the slur, and 38-39, in which he combined the slurs in A, in the main text we suggest a continuous slur from the 2nd quaver in bar 6 to the middle of bar 8.

b. 15-16

composition: Op. 10 No 11, Etude in E♭ major

End of slur in A (interpretation), FE (→GE1)

EE & GE2 (→GE3GE4)

..

Neither A nor FE allow to determine whether Chopin wanted to lead the slur to the 1st quaver in bar 16 or not. The slur in bar 15 suggests a continuation both in A and FE (→GE1), yet in bar 16 – which in A is the first one written out after the shortcut including bars 10-15 and in the editions the first one in a new line – there is no slur in any of the sources. The first quavers in the bars in the 1st section of the Etude provided with a staccato mark are generally not connected to the pervious slurs, however, in subsequent sections longer slurs prevail. Therefore, in the main text we suggest a slur running to the beginning of bar 16, taking into account the fact that the slur in bar 15 in FE, clearly exceeding the last quaver, could have been written in this form by Chopin.

The cautionary natural before d2 is present in all sources. In turn, the relevant sign in the L.H. was added only in GE2 (→GE3GE4) and EE4.

The cautionary flat before d in the 5th chord is included in all sources. In turn, a relevant accidental in the R.H. was added only in GE2 (→GE3GE4) and EE4.

Three cautionary naturals before the 3rd quaver in the bar are present in A, yet they were removed in a proofing of FE (→GE1,EE3). It seems to be Chopin's mistake, as after d1 and d2 at the end of the previous bar, the warning is quite justified in this place. The accidentals were added in subsequent GE,s and EE4 (in the latter only in the R.H.).
