Possible interpretation of FE |
Lack of slurs in bars 40-42 seems to be Chopin's oversight – it is revealed by both the musical context and some graphic features of the slurs of A and FE. In A the bars are written with an octave sign, which Chopin could mistakenly perceive as a slur (it is on the level of the slur from bars 38-39); moreover, the 1st slur in bar 43 suggests a continuation from bar 42 on the previous page. In turn, in FE (→GE1) the end of the slur in bar 39 is led to the bar line, contrary to A, which suggests its continuation in bar 40 in a new line (in the remaining editions the slur was shortened). Taking this into account, in the main text we suggest to add the slurs in a way which could stem from the notation of A, as well as alternative possibilities including also the suggestion of FE.
