Issues : Rhythmic errors

b. 34

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

Octave in A

Chord in FE (→GE,EE

..

The octave in A is the original version, changed by Chopin in a proofreading of FE (→GE,EE). In FE the correction was inaccurately performed – there are no dots extending the added notes, while the  (cautionary) was placed at the pitch of b2. The rhythmic error was corrected in GE and EE and the  was moved before a2 in GE1, yet removed in EE and subsequent GE,s.

b. 75

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

Dotted minim in A, GE & EE4

Semibreves in FE (→EE3)

..

The version of FE, when interpreted literally – d1-f1 as semibreves, including the upper one with a dot – is certainly erroneous. We assume, as it was interpreted in EE, that the notation determines the value of semibreve for the lower voice. This version could be considered to be a result of Chopin's proofreading, yet the engraver's error, who simply did not complete the work (a minim flag and a dot next to the lower note are missing), seems to be a more likely possibility. This is how this place was corrected in GE; we give this undoubtedly authentic version in the main text.

b. 80

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

Plain minim in A (→FEGE1,EE#)

Dotted minim in GE2 (→GE3GE4)

..

The missing dot extending the c2 minim is, according to us, the composer's error. Chopin would often extend or separate some of the notes with additional stems or ties without taking care of the rhythmic values of these "voices" to fill the entire bar. However, in this case the rhythmic gap concerns the main melodic line, which was rather not intended, as Chopin embraced it with a slur. The mistake was corrected in GE2 (→GE3GE4) and EE4.
