Fingering

b. 40

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

No fingering in A

Fingering in FE (→GE

Fingering in EE

Fingering written into FED

Our variant suggestion

..

The fingering of FE (→GE) is certainly authentic, as Chopin added it while proofreading FE. The same fingering, completed in the lowest octave by Fontana, is given in EE. However, in FED there is another one written next to the non-removed printed fingering, which is undoubtedly supposed to replace it. The second fingering allows for omitting a wider position between the 3rd and 4th fingers, which could be problematic. In the main text we include both authentic fingerings.

In EE Fontana repeated here the fingering he gave in analogous bars 1-2. In the main text we include only the digit written by the composer in the pupils' copy. Cf. the remark concerning bars 45-50.

Fingering in EE

..

According to his generally observed rule, Chopin did not give here the fingering in FE, as he had already indicated it in identical figures in bars 1-10. In EE Fontana added the fingering after his own development of fingering in bars 5-10, yet not identical (the 2nd finger in the L.H. at the end of bar 47 is an alternative solution, while the 4th finger on d1 in bar 49 is certainly a mistake related to the change of fingering indications to the English system – General Editorial Principlesp. 10). In the main text we respect Chopin's decision expressed in FE of not repeating the fingering given at the beginning of the Etude

We do not include the fingering added by Fontana in EE. It does not differ from the fingering indicated by Chopin in analogous bar 9.
