We present the literal interpretation of the slurs included in A, however, there is no doubt that Chopin considered this notation to be equal to one slur, as in bars 1-2. A similar hesitation, concerning the choice of space for leading the slur, is visible also in bars 41-42. category imprint: Interpretations within context; Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in GE , Inaccurate slurs in A , Authentic corrections of FE |

It is hard to state how con forza written in A would become con fuoco in FE (→GE,EE). In the editors opinion a mistake in reading the manuscript is quite probable. However, we keep the published version in the main text because Chopin undoubtedly controlled the performance indications while proofreading FE – i.a. he added just con forza in bar 15 – and did not change anything at the place under discussion. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Errors in FE , Authentic corrections of FE |

In the main text we give the fingering added by Chopin in a proofreading of FE (→GE). Fontana added it in EE in a way which can be considered as naturally stemming from Chopin's hints (although certainly not the only one in the 2nd half of bar 8). category imprint: Differences between sources issues: EE revisions , Authentic corrections of FE |

In the main text we give the fingering added by Chopin in a proofreading of FE (→GE), completed with Chopin's fingering of identical figures in the following section of the Etude, in this case in bar 54 (cf. General Editorial Principles, p. 17). In EE Fontana developed the fingering of FE, copying Chopin's fingering from analogous figures and adding the indications in the descending fragments of the passages. category imprint: Differences between sources; Editorial revisions issues: EE revisions , Authentic corrections of FE |

In A lack of the slurs over the motifs in the R.H. in bars 10-11 and 12-13 probably means that the slur over the second motif was added by Chopin in a proofreading of FE (→GE,EE). Lack of a similar addition over the first motif could be explained with the transition to a new page, which in FE falls exactly between bars 10 and 11, yet in a similar situation in analogous bars 20-23 the slur over the first motif was also omitted. In spite of this, in both places we consider the lack of the slur as an inaccuracy of notation and we suggest suitable additions in the main text. The slur in bars 10-11 was already added in EE. category imprint: Differences between sources; Editorial revisions issues: EE revisions , Authentic corrections of FE |
