  b. 62

2 slurs & 2 ties in A

Slur in FE (→GE,EE

Only in bar 62 A includes eight marks which are not considered in FE (→GE,EE):

  • two lower ties and the lowest slur between the notes in the chords in the R.H.,
  • triplet slur on the 3rd beat of the bar,
  • wedge over the last semiquaver in the R.H.,
  • accent/diminuendo under the 1st chord;
  •  in the 2nd half of the bar,
  • .

According to us, the most plausible explanation is the engraver's distraction, visible also in the adjacent bars, in which  (bar 61) and slurs in the L.H. (bar 63) were omitted. However, Chopin's partial intervention cannot be entirely excluded:

  • without the aforementioned dynamic indications and ties and slur between the chords, the phrase appears in an intensified form, as if in counterweight to the modest version in bars 20-22;
  • deletion of the triplet slur could have been one of the changes aimed at transforming the formal slurring of A (triplet slurs) into phrase and articulation one (cf. the remark concerning bars 52-62).
