Dot in A

No mark in FE (→GE,EE

Assuming that all four staccato marks written in A at the beginning of bars 77, 79 and 81 were accidentally omitted in FE, we can wonder why Chopin did not return any of them at the time of proofreading FE. It is even more puzzling, as the staccato dot in bar 73 was added during a proofreading. According to us, there are at least two reasons for which it is G1 in bar 73 that requires more attention of the performer than and in the described bars:

  • as the bass note of the dominant chord appears here for the last time in the entire Etude;
  • short articulation of the quavers in bars 77, 79 and 81 stems from shifting or raising the hand forced by the change of register or appearance of the second hand. In bar 73 there are no obstacles for combining the initial quaver with the following semiquavers.
