composition: Op. 10 No 2, Etude in A minor

..

In CLI and Ap the 7th and 15th semiquavers are written as a1. At the same time, the notation of Ap is faultless, whereas in CLI there is no  returning a1 on the 4th beat of the bar. The latter also appears in FEcor, in which Chopin added the , yet only before the last note. It was moved to the correct position only in a later proofreading of FE (→EE2EE3), which, eventually, displays an entirely correct text.
In GE and EE4 further revisions concerning this section (from the 7th semiquaver to the end of the bar) were performed, adding or removing cautionary accidentals. The modifications do not change the meaning of the text, they only influence its transparency.

Triad & fifth in CLI

Triads in Ap & FEcor

Triads in FE (→EE2EE3)

Triads in GE & #Wa4

..

The fifth on the 3rd beat of the bar in CLI is probably the original version. In the sources Chopin's hesitation is also reflected, as far as the position of the cautionary  before cis concerned. In the main text we adopt – following FE (→EE2EE3) – the sign before the chord on the 3rd beat of the bar.

b. 39

composition: Op. 10 No 2, Etude in A minor

No mark in CLI & FE (→GE,EE2

Probable accent in Ap

Possible long accent in Ap

Possible  in Ap

 in EE3 (→EE4)

..

The mark in Ap may be, according to us, interpreted as an accent (short or long?) or . Similarly as in bar 38, in the main text we do not consider this ambiguous mark. The hairpin  was arbitrarily added in EE3 (→EE4), certainly after bar 4.

not tied in CLI, Ap & FE (→EE2EE3)

tied in GE & EE4

The ties sustaining are probably (GE) or certainly (EE4) an addition of the revisers of these editions. In the main text we adopt the unequivocally authentic version of CLI, Ap and FE (→EE2EE3).

The fifth on the 3rd beat of the bar in CLI is probably the original version. The sources also reflect Chopin's hesitation concerning the position of the cautionary  before c1. In the main text we adopt – following FE (→EE2EE3) – the accidental before the chord on the 3rd beat of the bar.
