b. 85-89

composition: Op. 10 No 8, Etude in F major

Slur in A

No slur in FE (→GE,EE)

..

Lack of the slur in the editions is most probably a result of negligence of the engraver of FE (→GE,EE). While proofreading FE, Chopin added sempre legatiss. in bar 85, yet according to us, this indication does not exclude the use of a slur.

b. 86-87

composition: Op. 10 No 8, Etude in F major

..

In both bars A has additional sharps before f3, the 10th semiquaver. In FE (→GE,EE) the superfluous signs were removed.

b. 86

composition: Op. 10 No 8, Etude in F major

3rd finger in A & EE

5th finger in FE (→GE)

Our variant suggestion

..

It is hard to determine whether the change of the fingering digit '1', which occurred between A and FE (→GE), is a result of Chopin's correction or the engraver's error. Both fingering solutions are natural and comfortable, hence we include both in the main text, with affinity toward the undoubtedly authentic fingering of A. It is the fingering of EE that draws attention, in which Fontana changed the indication included in FE to the one Chopin wrote in A.

b. 88

composition: Op. 10 No 8, Etude in F major

No accent in A

Accent in FE (→GE,EE)

Our variant suggestion

..

The accent at the beginning of the 4th group of semiquavers is included in FE (→GE,EE). In such a context it is not certain whether it was Chopin that added it during a proofreading or the engraver that left one sign too many "on the run". Cf. bars 9-10.
