FE1 - First French edition

Publisher: Maurice Schlesinger
Date: 12 XII 1841
Title: Prélude
Dedication: None

With its three pages of musical text, FE1 formed part of the lavish album entitled Keepsake des Pianistes, containing works by 13 composers. The more modest version of that album was offered to subscribers to Revue et Gazette Musicale published by Schlesinger. FE1 is based on [A1] and – judging from numerous errors – was unlikely to be proofread by Chopin.

The major errors of FE1 include mistaken notes g1-ain bar 22 and
b1-f2 in the 11th Cadenza grouping in bar 79, wrong accidentals, e.g.
(c3) before the 2nd chord of bar 43,  (B1) before the lowest quaver of bar 56, two  (d2-d3) at the beginning of bar 58.

Some of those errors, and particularly numerous missing accidentals, may have occurred in [A1]. Some other examples of errors – those corrected in FE2 – are listed in the description of that edition. The missing augmenting dot for g in bar 4 or grace notes and arpeggios in bar 9 may be considered as inaccuracies of [A1] or errors of FE1.

The photographic images of Wf1 available in our system present the decorative album from the Poznań collection of the Glensks; this is the only copy of that publication known so far. As the final pages we give for comparison the lithographic version appended to the December edition of Revue et Gazette Musicale (copy from the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, shelf mark M.S.1413 (1)). Technical flaws of print visible here and there are serious enough to prevent correct reading of the text (e.g. lack of  before g in bar 25).
