Issues : Terzverschreibung error

The sound of the 2nd quaver intended by Chopin gives rise to doubts. JC has here a b-e1-g1 triad, while EF – a b-g1 sixth. Each of those versions smoothly combines both with the spread chord d-b-f1 in the previous bar and the next three quavers creating a B major chord. Those versions, and particularly the sixth confirmed in analogous bar 39, may be considered as a fully-fledged alternative for the reconstruction of the version of [A] described below. category imprint: Interpretations within context; Differences between sources issues: Terzverschreibung error , Errors in PE |

PE features d2 as the upper note of the crotchet at the beginning of the bar. According to us, it is the so called Terzverschreibung, as using an incomplete chord in a typical cadenza formula ending an eight-bar section is very unlikely. Therefore, in the main text we give b1 which is present in JC and EF. We provide the note with a cautionary . category imprint: Interpretations within context; Differences between sources; Editorial revisions issues: Terzverschreibung error , Errors in PE |

On the 4th quaver of the bar, JC has the a1 note, similarly as on the second. It is almost certainly a mistake, perhaps of Chopin himself committed in [AI]. Such a type of errors belongs to the most often both in autographs and copies. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Terzverschreibung error , Errors in the number of ledger lines , Errors of JC |

PE has the e3-g3 third as the 2nd quaver of the bar. Admittedly, the version is acceptable, as far as the sound and piano performance are concerned, yet the e3 note burdens and blurs unnecessarily the melody's line; therefore, a misreading of [A] or a proofing (adding the correct note without deleting the wrong one) seem to be much more probable. category imprint: Interpretations within context; Differences between sources issues: Terzverschreibung error , Errors in PE , Partial corrections |

The accuracy of e in PE is highly unlikely in this context, as the note makes the G-f2 seventh resolve on the e-e2 unison with a tripled third in the C minor chord. Therefore, we consider it to be erroneous and we adopt c featured in JC and EF to the main text. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Terzverschreibung error , Errors in PE |
