b. 70-74

composition: WN 17, Polonaise in B♭ major

No marks in JC & EF

Accent in PE

Our suggestion

..

We propose to complete the accent over the 2nd quaver in bar 70 after the authentic sign given by PE in analogous bar 74.

Tie to e4 in JC & EF

No tie in PE

..

In PE, the tie sustaining the quaver beginning the sequence of demisemiquavers is absent both here and in analogous bar 74. In spite of that, the sign's oversight – by the engraver or even by Chopin in [A] – seems to be very likely due to the doubtless hold of this note in JC and EF and a structural analogy with bar 62.

No slur in JC

Beginning of slur in EF

Beginning of slur in PE

..

In the main text we give the slur of PE, which starts from the quaver. In EF, the beginning of the slur falls on the first of demisemiquavers. In similar contexts, Chopin used both types of notation; it also happens that it is hard to determine from each note the carelessly put slur was meant to start in the autograph.

e3 in JC

f3 in EF & PE

..

In JC, the last note in this bar is an e3. The mistake is revealed by the shape of the relevant fragment of figurations in the next bar, and first of all, by the compatible version of EF and PE.
