JC, interpretation

JC, other interpretation

EF & PE

In JC, after bar 87 and before the indication Dal Segno, there are included additional sound combinations in a form of crotchets, including the G1-G octave in the L.H. (the lower note was mistakenly written as B1) and the B-g sixth in the R.H. The interpretation of this notation, in spite of its simplifications and inaccuracies, seems to be unquestionable in its essence: additional "crotchets" are supposed to replace the first strike in bar 52, which opens the repeated segment Dal Segno as bar 88. However, it is not clear which real rhythmic value is to be given to those "crotchets" – the possibility that Chopin had in mind real crotchets, which would mean that the characteristic motif opening the Trio would be left out, must be definitely excluded. We propose two interpretations:

  • "default", consisting in a simple insertion of the given sound combinations in the rhythmic scheme of bar 52;
  • "practical", based on the authentic solution applied by Chopin in a similar situation in bar 60.

In the main text we give the transition in a simpler version of EF and PE, which does not raise any doubts.
