Lack of tempo and character indications in JC and PE means that those which are included in EF almost certainly constitute Fontana's addition. In accordance with a declaration which can be found in the afterword to EF, some of those additions may reflect Chopin's intentions, known to Fontana thanks to his personal contacts with the composer (see characteristics of those editions). Therefore, the metronome tempo (=92) is very close to =96, which was used by Chopin trice in the final fragments of polonaise character of the Variations, Op. 2 and Polonaises, Op. 3 and 22 (those are the unique authentic metronome markings referring to the polonaises). Cf. the remark concerning bars 1-3.
