Slurs

b. 540-541

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

Slur in EE & GC (→GE)

..

In the main text we present a slur based on EE and GC (→GE) which is easier to interpret. The FE slur, ending in b. 541, i.e. the last one on this edition's page, may raise doubts as for the correctness of its scope copied into FE.

b. 540-541

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

..

In EE the slur begins as early as in b. 541, close to its beginning even though there are no notes (no even rest) there.

b. 548-549

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

Slur in EE and FE

Slurs in GC

Slurs in GE

..

One can doubt whether the break between the slurs visible in GC and copied even more vividly into GE actually reflects the true sense of [A1] notation, as neither EE nor FE displays this divided slur. The break in the slur at this point is related to the basic rhythmic structure (in b. 549 anouther four-bar section begins) but it is not compatible with the motif-based or phrase structure. Therefore, for the main text we adopt the EE and FE version.

b. 557-558

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

Slurs in EE & GC (→GE)

Slur in FE

..

Both slurring variants are almost certainly authentic and musically justified. The EE and GC (→GE) version seems more informative - it suggests both overall continuity and uniformity of the phrase of bars 542-567 as well as marks the beginning of of the last decisive phrase of crescendo. Therefore, we present it in the main text, even though thef FE version may be the later one.

b. 566-567

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

Slur in EE

Slur & wedge in GC

Slur in FE

Slur in GE

..

The slur endings of both EE and GC are musically justified. The slur of FE seems less convincing, it may have not been read correctly. The slur in GE, even though based on GC, is imprecise. In the main text we present the most precise markings of GC - the wedge emphasised slur ending.
