Slur in EE and FE

Slurs in GC

Slurs in GE

..

One can doubt whether the break between the slurs visible in GC and copied even more vividly into GE actually reflects the true sense of [A1] notation, as neither EE nor FE displays this divided slur. The break in the slur at this point is related to the basic rhythmic structure (in b. 549 anouther four-bar section begins) but it is not compatible with the motif-based or phrase structure. Therefore, for the main text we adopt the EE and FE version.

No tie in EE

Tied g in GC (→GE) & FE

In EE g is not tied, which most probably results from omission. In GC there is no appropriatew tie in b. 572 (at the end of ther system), which was corrected in GE.

Slurs in GC, contextual interpretation

Literal reading of slurs in GC (→GE)

No slurs in FE

..

The FE - without slurs - most probably goes back to the original phrasing of these bars. The EE with a slur in bars 581-584 must be Chopin's annotations of the original. In the main text we use undoubtedly the authentic and most precise slurring of GC. The slurs over the new line break (bars 580-581) in GC, when read literally, suggest continuation. Such was the reading of GE, however, we believe Chopin to have meant a new slur from b. 581, just like in EE.

Contextual interpretation of slurs in GC

..

In the main text we present the GC slurring. Literal reading of the slurs extending over the bar line (bars 588-589) suggests continuation. Such is the interpretation of GE and there is an identical slur in EE. However, we believe that Chopin intended here a new slur from b. 589, similarly to what we find in FE
