It is hard to believe that scarce slurring of bars 573-588 and 605-616 in EE and FE was fully to blame on the engravers or copyists. It seems much more probable that there once existed original notation of these bars (maybe in [A1]), where the only notated slurs were the ones in LH in bars 575-576 and analogous. Then, Chopin corrected the slurs three times, each time notating something different:
- in the basis for EE he added slurs in bars 581-588 and 613-616;
- in the basis for FE - probably [A2] - he added slurs in LH in bars 573-574 and 577-578 and 606 and 609-610;
- in the basis for GC or in GC itself - some slurs or corrections in the copy may be attributed to Chopin - he added all the above and remaining slurs.
In the above analysis one can notice few markings in [A2] (→FE). This may suggest that Chopin was pressed for time when he was writing this autograph - cf. annotations to b. 574 and corresponding 601, 602). In the main text we present the most precise markings of GC. We believe that in GE some slurs of GC were interpreted too literally.
