No indication in EE & FE

sostenuto in GC (→GE

The two markings sostenuto and  in this bar, which according to us may convey the authentic image of Scherzo, never appear simultaneously in any of the sources (EE, GC and FE). And it is not easy to determine whether and which of the marking may express Chopin's last decision. Based on the filiation of sources we may assume the following order of changes:

  1.  showing in EE may have been present already in [A1];
  2. writing GC the copyist left the discussed bar without any dynamic markings; impossible to tell whether this was Chopin who removed  from [A1] before GC was made, or Gutmann simply omitted it;
  3. upon seeing the bar in GC without any markings, Chopin added sostenuto;
  4. writing [A2] for FE, Chopin notated ; we do not know whether this was a conscious reference to the original marking or a repetition of the marking from previous autograph.

Therefore, there is no basis for indicating any of the versions as the ultimate one, and so believing that the two markings are complementary we present both of them in the main text.
