  b. 327-335

in EE

in GC (→GE)

No indication in FE

Diminuendo in bars 327-335 is notated in EE and GC (→GE). The notation of autograph is rather identical to GC as writing markings in syllables was arbitrary and used often in EE

No such marking means that  in b. 320 applies up to  in b. 340. Moreover, such reading seems to be confirmed by the lack of sotto voce in b. 336, and the presence of  in b. 340. We believe that Chopin may have overlooked this writing [A2] that may have been caused by a different notation of return to the principal key (C minor, see neighbouring annotation):

  • in FE not only there are no dim. and sotto voce markings but also there is no  in b. 335; the latter seems to us necessary as such pedalling is not at all obvious here;
  • the  marking in b. 340 does not necessarily mean an explicit change in dynamics to the previous bars; it may refer to the dynamics shown earlier in rhythmically similar four-bar segments of a chant character.
