Slurs in A

Slurs in GE

Slurs in FE (→EE)

The earlier start in GE (→FEEE) of the slur in bar 58 seems a too far-reaching interpretation, as the slur in A does not reach beyond the bar line. That question is discussed in more detail in bar 60.

Moving the slurs under the R.H. chords, a routine intervention of engravers in those days, is only apparently neutral to their meaning. In Chopin's notation slurs above the right hand may - in a rhythmically uniform, homophonic texture - also apply to the left hand. Similarly, slurs over chords may apply to entire chords and to their upper part. Both those nuances of meaning become lost when slurs are moved.
