b. 5

composition: Op. 24 No. 2, Mazurka in C major

f1 in A (→GE)

e1 in FE (→EE)

..

When proofing FE, Chopin changed the top note of the first chord in the L.H. from f1 to e1. This is the first change of the accompaniment in the course of this Mazurka (cf. bar 89, and also for instance bar 7 and analog. or bar 57).

The note g is not tied in A (→GE)

A tie sustaining g in FE (→EE)

..

In A (→GE) the note is not sustained, and neither is it in five analogous places (bars 15-16, 19-20, 51-52, 99-100 and 103-104). The tie appearing in FE (→EE) may result from Chopin's correction. However, the fact that no similar ties can be found in any of the remaining analogous places makes us also consider other possible explanations. In our opinion, the engraver's error is a probable option.

Sixths in A (→GE)

A chord in GE (→EE)

..

Initially, the 2rd and the 3rd crotchet were e flat-a flat-c1 triads in A. Then Chopin erased both a flat notes and this was the version that appeared in GE. The note a flat reappears in FE (→EE), but only on the 2nd beat. This is probably the result of Chopin's correction in FE.

b. 89

composition: Op. 24 No. 2, Mazurka in C major

e1 in the 2nd chord in A (→GE)

f1 in FE (→EE)

..

A has visible traces of the highest note of the 2nd chord in the L.H. having been corrected from f1 to e1. The resulting a-c1-e1 chord was reproduced in GE, and through GE it also appeared in FE, where Chopin corrected the chord again restoring the a-c1-fversion. That ultimate version, repeated in EE, can be found in our main text.

The version of A (→GE)

Chopin's correction in FE (→EE)

The editors' proposition

..

The version of A (→GE) here is identical with bars 14 and 46. Chopin changed it when proofing FE (→EE), introducing a varied version of the melodic motif. However, the initial version of the slurring was left unchanged, which is an oversight of the engraver, or of Chopin himself. As the corrected version of the motif is the same as the one that Chopin used in bars 18 and 50, in our main text we propose a slur modelled on Chopin's slurring in those bars.
