Issues : Scope of dynamic hairpins

b. 20

composition: WN 55, Waltz in F minor

..

In AE, the crescendo hairpin ends just before the last semiquaver in the R.H. However, there is a second hairpin written in pencil in this place, dragged beyond the double bar line until the 1st beat in the second volta. It can be considered a graphic clarification of the original crescendo, now encompassing also the last note in the R.H. In the edited version of AE, we suggest extending the dynamic hairpin to the end of the first volta.

b. 25-28

composition: WN 55, Waltz in F minor

..

In bars 25-28, there is a dynamic hairpin in AG. The arms of the last hairpin, ending in bar 28, are uneven: the bottom arm reaches the chord on the 2nd beat of the bar, whereas the top one reaches the 1st beat of the bar. A single crescendo hairpin in bar 25 (of the same range as in bar 25 in AG) is present also in FEF and GEF.

b. 31-34

composition: WN 55, Waltz in F minor

The hairpin is written only in AG (→CY). The first crescendo hairpin encompasses the entire two bars. Due to the static version of the L.H. in bar 32, where, in the majority of the sources, there is a doubly repeated d-f third, our suggestion is a hairpin dragged only to the 1st beat in bar 32.

b. 41-44

composition: WN 55, Waltz in F minor

Within bars 41-44, the hairpins are written directly only in CY (in AG, there are letters of the fragment's repetition). In CY, the hairpins are slightly moved to the right: the first goes beyond the bar line and ends before the 1st beat in the R.H. in bar 42, whereas the second ends before the 1st beat in bar 43. The last crescendo hairpin is dragged as far as to the last beat in bar 44 and overlaps the new musical phrase. For the editorial version we choose the same solution as in the edited AG in bars 25-28.
In FEF and GEF, there is a single crescendo hairpin in bar 41, of the same range as the first hairpin in the edited AG (→CY).
