In the sources, one can encounter a few variants of the Waltz's beginning:
- without upbeat in AR (it may be the earliest autograph) - in this manuscript, there is also an f(most likely) grace note written in pencil, which should be performed only in the repetition of the first section of the Waltz, i.e. after the 1st volta (like in AO)
- with upbeat in the remaining sources: with a tied cin AO, AK, AG (→CY), FEF and GEF; with a repeated cin PE and AE (→CX); with a repeated cand with an fgrace note in AE (the grace note written in pencil) and CC. In CC, the L.H. is not written in the upbeat.

CC features a minim (without dot). In another commenced copy of the waltz, on the rear 2nd page of CC, there is also a minim. Therefore, the absence of dot in this source does not seem to result from an oversight of the copyist of CC, but from the fact of copying from a source in which the dot had been overlooked (another autograph or copy of autograph). The minim in the remaining sources is provided with a dot.

In AG, Chopin did not write the time signature; the remaining sources feature a 3/4 marking.

b. 1-22

composition: WN 55, Waltz in F minor

PE completed all possible rests in the voices in the L.H.; however, the general text overlaps with FEF and GEF. It results only from the editor's aim to precisely write out and to order, in terms of rhythm, multiple parts in the L.H. In further annotations, concerning the occurrence of this type of rests, we consider all those sources jointly and we display the more transparent version, without rests, by default (generally the graphic version of FEF and/or GEF).

Another common revision in the F sources is prolonging the rhythmic value of the 1st beat in the L.H. - to a minim (most often in #CF) or a dotted minim (PE, FEF and GEF). In the majority of the cases, it is an editorial revision. In the case when the extension of the 1st beat applies to the version of F only, we do not include variants with miniatures. An exception are the situations in which the 2nd and 3rd beats of the bar in F are different than in the remaining sources and when the prolonged 1st beat is confirmed by other sources - in such situations we make it possible to change the rhythmic variant of the 1st beat in the L.H.

The versions differ in the duration of the second value in the L.H. In the autographs, the 3rd beat is a crotchet, in the editions (F) - a minim.

The crotchet on the 1st beat in the L.H. in CX may be considered a copying inaccuracy as well as the dotted minim in CC - those versions are not confirmed by any of the autographs.
