b. 1-23

composition: WN 55, Waltz in F minor

..

The first page of FC, to bar 23, has not been preserved to the present day. In the abbreviated markings of sources from Fontana's version we adopt:
- to bar 23: F = PE, FEF, GEF
- from bar 23: F = PE, FEF, GEF and FC.

b. 1

composition: WN 55, Waltz in F minor

..

In this place, CC includes a single bar line, without repeat signs. After the first volta, there is a double bar line, yet also without repeat signs. We consider it to be an inaccuracy of notation in this source, one of many. In another copy of the Waltz, commenced on the verso of CC, there is a double line, without repeat signs. A similar situation occurs in CX – there is a single bar line, without repeat signs. The remaining sources feature a double bar line with repeat signs in this place. In FEF and GEF the repetition is written out with notes.

b. 1-52

composition: WN 55, Waltz in F minor

..

The repetition of the whole Waltz is marked in #CF and PE (segno, two codas at the end of the piece) and written out with notes in FEF and GEF. Both the repetition and the link between bar 52 and bar 1 bear marks of authenticity:

  • initially, the form of the Waltz in A minor, Op. 34 No. 2 was similar;
  • a harmonic link analogous to the link between bars 52 and bar 1 appears in Chopin's pieces on a number of occasions, e.g. in the Waltz in A major, WN 28.

In order to facilitate a transparent comparison of all sources, we change the written-out repetition in FEF and GEF to the version with segno and two codas (like in #CF and PE).

b. 20

composition: WN 55, Waltz in F minor

In AG, the repetition of the fragment in bars 20-52 is written inaccurately - a respective sign at the end of the piece is missing.
