In the sources the  mark reaches , the position of which is, however, ambiguous in A, as it was written over the e1-e2 L.H. octave and a quaver later as well, under the R.H. e2 note. According to us, the mark is supposed to concern the R.H., and this is the interpretation we provide in the main text. Meanwhile, in the editions  was printed on the 4th quaver from the end of the bar, which probably resulted in a respective shift of the  hairpin (in FE1 the hairpin was omitted, which was corrected in FE2).

Staccato dot in A

No mark in GE (→FE,EE,IE)

The missing dot in GE (→FE,EE,IE) is most probably due to the engraver's oversight.

No marks in GE (→FE,EE,IE)

The first two accents in the top voice were most probably overlooked by the GE engraver (→FE,EE,IE).

Long accent in A & FE

in GE

No marking in EE

Longer  in IE

..

The A mark is a quite typical long accent, yet in GE it was clearly placed after the note and prolonged, which made it resemble a  hairpin. Interestingly enough, none of the remaining editions reproduced it correctly:

  • in FE it was moved over the minim and shortened, which resulted in a version that is surprisingly similar to the A notation,
  • in EE it was omitted,
  • in IE it was extended.

Long accent in A, contextual interpretation

No mark in EE1

..

We interpret the  mark entered into A as a long accent – the mark concerns the R.H. top voice, which results from its position, and it naturally emphasises the syncopated c2 crotchet. The A notation was precisely reproduced in the editions (except EE1, in which the mark was overlooked), which, in the case of printed text, suggests rather a diminuendo hairpin.
