In A the 
mark resembles an accent (short), yet it is placed between the notes, which rules out this interpretation. Taking into account the 
written after this mark, one could assume that we are dealing with a short diminuendo hairpin, which we provide in the main text. The interpretation adopted by GE (→FE,EE) adjusts this bar to the two previous ones, in which a similar mark was on the 3rd beat of the bar and could be interpreted as an accent. By moving the mark to the 3rd beat, the GE engraver (reviser?) had to fit it together with (contrary to A), which looked quite clumsy and was changed, although not always significantly, in all the remaining editions. As part of these changes, in IE the discussed mark was moved before the 3rd beat, close to the A notation.
