The A notation does not determine where the pedal should be released before it being pressed again in the middle of bar 223. According to us, there are 2 possible solutions:
- change of pedal in the middle of bar 223, which can be considered a default interpretation – implementation of what was written by Chopin and nothing more;
- release the pedal before the passage in bar 223 begins, which we consider a contextual interpretation, since this is how Chopin marked it in similar situations in bar 227 (in this case there is also no chord change between the beginning of the bar and the following passage), as well as in bar 149 and 229 (in this case an earlier pedal release is forced by a harmonic change).
In the main text we suggest the latter, since it is justified by authentic pedal markings in similar places. Moreover, the first suggestion results in a sound effect very similar to the continuous pedal of the FE version, which undermines the purpose of supplementing it. The FE version (→EE) can be considered an equal variant.
