b. 146-147

  in b. 147 in A (→GE)

 in b. 146-147 in FE (→EE)

The A pedal markings, although corrected by Chopin, are probably erroneous. Chopin wrote a  (which was later deleted) at the end of bar 146, last on a page; however, he did not write the corresponding – judging from the FE version –  mark at the beginning of bar 147 on the next page. Instead, we can see there a pair of  and  marks, indicating a pedal change in the middle of bar 147, hence after the harmonic change occurring at the beginning of this bar. In a similar situation in bars 313-314 all sources feature a pedal change on the chord change, as in FE in the discussed place. Therefore, it seems that at the beginning of a new page Chopin, for some reason, wrote a pedal change later than he initially intended. According to us, Chopin's likely mistake was caused by a combination of two factors:

  • distraction between the pages,
  • enharmonic change of notation of the diminished seventh chord from a-c-d-f to a-c-e-g and the corresponding striking change in notation – instead of a tangle of sharps and naturals, the figuration notation is transparent, using notes compliant with the key signature (c, d, e, f).

These factors resulted in an erroneous belief that the harmonic change occurs after the 1st chord in bar 147, which resulted in writing appropriate pedal markings – cf. the pedal markings in bar 149 and 227. In this situation in the main text we give the FE (→EE) pedal markings, compliant with the rhythm of harmonic changes, particularly since their presence in FE required Chopin's intervention in [FC] or while proofreading FE.
