Slurs

b. 21

composition: Op. 30 No. 4, Mazurka in C# minor

Slur from semiquaver in FC (→GE)

Slur from crotchet in FE (→EE)

..

It is difficult to say what the slur of [A], perhaps inaccurately written, could have looked like. In the main text we give the version of the principal source, FC.

b. 22-24

composition: Op. 30 No. 4, Mazurka in C# minor

Dots & slurs in FC

No markings in FE (→EE)

Slurs in GE

..

In bars 22 and 24 the L.H. sets of markings – consisting of a staccato dot and a slur – could have been added by Chopin to [A] after FE had already been engraved. It is less likely that they could have been added by Chopin to FC, since they are not characteristic of Chopin's additions.
The absence of the dots in GE most probably resulted from an oversight (or perhaps they were ignored? – both are very small) by the engraver.
Similar situations are to be found in bar 28 and in bars 118, 120 and 122.

b. 26

composition: Op. 30 No. 4, Mazurka in C# minor

No markings in sources

Dot & slur suggested by the editors

..

In the main text we add a staccato dot and a slur in the L.H. part after the markings of FC in analogous figures in bars 22, 24 and 28 and 118, 120 and 122. In the entire Mazurka, this place appears 8 times, out of which six have such markings.

b. 28

composition: Op. 30 No. 4, Mazurka in C# minor

Dot & slur in FC

No markings in FE (→EE)

Slur in GE

..

Chopin could have added to [A] the articulation markings in the L.H. part after FE had already been engraved. The absence of the staccato dot in GE is most probably an oversight by the engraver.

b. 32-33

composition: Op. 30 No. 4, Mazurka in C# minor

New slur in FC (→GE)

Continued slur in FE (→EE)

..

It is difficult to say which version of slurring is later – Chopin could have separated the initial continuous slur while correcting [A] before handing it over to the copyist; however, the slightly undulating shape of the slur in FE could be indicating that the slurs were being combined in the proofreading of this edition. A possible correction is also supported by likely corrections in the two previous bars (rhythm and pedalling). Taking into account the above, in the main text we give the FE version, regarding the FC slurs, indicating the beginning of a new theme, as equal.
