Issues : Authentic corrections of FE

b. 81-84

composition: Op. 30 No. 4, Mazurka in C# minor

No indication in FC (→GE)

stretto - - in FE (→EE)

..

There are no reasons to doubt the authenticity of stretto - -, which was most probably added in the stage of proofreading FE or to the basis thereof – Chopin most probably added it together with the following cresc. - -, which he also entered into FC. Therefore, we include it in the main text.

b. 89

composition: Op. 30 No. 4, Mazurka in C# minor

No c1 in chords in FC (→GE)

Chords with c1 in FE (→EE)

..

A comparison with analogous bar 73 suggests that the version of FC (→GE) is erroneous. It is likely that Fontana did not notice both c1 notes in the chords due to inaccurate notation – in Chopin's autographs, it can sometimes be difficult to determine the presence of notes on ledger lines in the middle of chords. A correction to FC (in print or of the basis) cannot be ruled out either.

b. 93-94

composition: Op. 30 No. 4, Mazurka in C# minor

No markings in FC (→GE)

Pedalling in FE (→EE)

..

As in analogous bars 77-78, Chopin most probably added the pedal markings while proofreading FE.

b. 125

composition: Op. 30 No. 4, Mazurka in C# minor

poco stretto in FC (→GE)

calando in FE (→EE)

..

The differing performance markings of FC and FE were independently introduced by Chopin both in the copy and in the stage of proofreading FE (or in the basis for it) – see the note on the filiation of the Mazurkas. In the main text we give the version of the principal source (FC), but the second version may be regarded as an equal option.

b. 136-139

composition: Op. 30 No. 4, Mazurka in C# minor

slentando in FC (→GE)

smorz. - - in FE (→EE)

..

Chopin entered slentando into FC (→GE). Similarly, Chopin added the smorz. - - indication present in FE (→EE) probably only just while proofreading this edition.
Therefore, both indications, of a similar meaning, can be regarded as equal variants.
