b. 125

poco stretto in FC (→GE)

calando in FE (→EE)

We regard the differing performance markings in the Mazurka ending as equal, since the preserved sources do not reveal any traces of removal of any version, while the chronological order of the additions remains uncertain. Thanks to different handwriting in FC, we can state the following:

  • The earliest indication, shared by both sources, in FC written in Fontana's hand, is dim. - - in bars 129-132.
  • The remaining indications – poco stretto - - e - in bars 125-128 and slentando in bars 136-137 – were added to FC by Chopin. Their counterparts in FEcalando - - in bars 126-128 and smorz. - - in bars 136-139 – must have been added in the stage of proofreading FE or to the basis thereof.
  • The four long accents in bars 133-136 were added by Chopin both to FC and in the stage of proofreading FE or to the basis thereof, but he added  only to FC.

One can see that both discussed sources were carefully elaborated in this fragment, yet the resulting versions are not entirely compatible.
