Pedalling

b. 27-28

composition: Op. 30, Mazurka in D♭ major

No markings in FC (→GE)

Pedalling in FE (→EE)

..

The absence of pedalling in FC (→GE) could be caused by the same issue as the absence of the R.H. slur – distraction at the end of a page. Another possibility could be an oversight by Chopin, who was adding pedalling to FC – starting from bar 29, which opens a new page in FC, the pedal markings are written in Chopin's hand (to bar 39).

b. 31-39

composition: Op. 30, Mazurka in D♭ major

..

All pedal markings in these bars are written in FC in Chopin's hand, which means that the same markings in FE were added in the stage of proofreading this edition or to the basis thereof.

b. 38

composition: Op. 30, Mazurka in D♭ major

No markings in FC (→GE)

  in FE (→EE)

..

The pedalling of FE (→EE) seems to be a mistake, even if it was entered by Chopin. The pedalling of bars 25-39, compliant between FC and FE except this place, reveals an easy-to-grasp regularity – the use of pedal is marked only where the bass notes are played separately – a regularity that the discussed markings of FE break.

composition: Op. 30, Mazurka in D♭ major

in FC (→GE) & EE

No sign in FE

Our variant suggestion

..

As was the case with the fermatas, both pedalling versions may be authentic – both the standard FC version and the single  mark in FE are often used by Chopin in the endings. Another argument against a possible mistake ( overlooked in FE) or a revision ( added by the copyist – cf. the ending of the Prelude in B, Op. 28 No. 11) is the fact that both versions correlate with the presence of fermatas – pedal release is marked in FC, in which there are no fermatas. In this situation, in the main text we suggest a variant solution.
