  b. 30

after 3rd beat in FC (→GE)

before 2nd beat in FE (→EE)

before 3rd beat, suggested by the editors

Both source versions concerning the position of  seem questionable, although they do not sound wrong:

  • Fontana would write all  marks in the Mazurka after the 3rd crotchet in the bar, regardless of the changing (sometimes) harmonies – cf., e.g. mixed harmonies in bar 7 or in bar 18, sounding bad.
  • In FE the mark is placed too early – such a short pedal does not fulfill its basic function, that is combining subsequently played notes in chords. This assumption is confirmed by the pedalling of analogous bar 62.

Taking into account the above, in the main text we place the mark before the 3rd beat of the bar, in accordance with the FE notation in bar 62. The longer FC pedal could be considered a variant emphasising the crescendo effect.
