Issues : Scope of dynamic hairpins

b. 19

composition: Op. 29, Impromptu in A♭ major

..

A (→GE) and FE differ in the range of the crescendo hairpins. A includes hairpins which begin after the 3rd quaver and end before the last crotchet in the bar. In FE the hairpins were led from the 2nd quaver to the end of the bar. EE is totally lacking the sign. We adopt the variant of A (→GE).

b. 20

composition: Op. 29, Impromptu in A♭ major

..

The range of the crescendo hairpins in A is ambiguous. We assume the upper arm to be determining. The sign was similarly interpreted in GE. In FE the sign is placed quite earlier, under the 2nd quaver, while EE is totally lacking it.

b. 25-26

composition: Op. 29, Impromptu in A♭ major

..

We recreate a characteristic for Chopin overlapping of the diminuendo hairpins and word indication, which was separated in all editions. The range of the hairpins in A (-GE) was recreated in the same manner in FE. In EE the hairpins were shortened to the middle of bar 26.

b. 42

composition: Op. 29, Impromptu in A♭ major

..

The range of the diminuendo hairpins is slightly varied. A has the hairpins beginning on the 2nd beat of the bar, similarly as in FE. In GE the hairpins begin just after the minim and end before the last value of the bar. In EE the hairpins are led to the last note. We adopt the concordant notation of A and FE.

b. 53-54

composition: Op. 29, Impromptu in A♭ major

..

The sources differ in the range of dynamic hairpins and their positioning. The hairpins in A start just after the 1st crotchet in bar 53 and they end before the 1st beat of bar 54. In GE the beginning of crescendo was recreated according to A, yet it was shortened to the bar line. In EE the hairpins were put over the 1st note to the end of bar 54. A and EE have their hairpins above the upper pentagram, while FE and GE between the pentagrams.
