b. 93

The main text comes from FE and EE, it is also given in #FE4. In A (→GE1GE2GE3) Chopin wrote a different version. We give priority to the version concordant with the relevant bar in the initial part of Impromptu (bar 11), taking into account the following arguments:

  • the melody in the main version (c2-d2) develops in a more coherent and natural manner – all the ascending motifs, appearing in bars 91-95 after the crotchet stop of triplet movement, begin with a lower note than the previous one;
  • it cannot be excluded that the version with d2-e2, in which the line of melody from two bars before repeats exactly, is the original version of bars 11 and 93, corrected by Chopin in the lost manuscripts (e.g. in the base texts for FE and EE); the change for c2-dwould be an audible enrichment of the melodic line;
  • lack of other significant differences between the extreme parts of the piece (bars 1-30 and 83-112); it is quite probable that in the manuscript base texts for FE and EE bars 83-112 were marked only in an abbreviated manner as repetition of bars 1-30 (cf. commentaries concerning bars 7, 10, 21 and 105-107);
  • while writing A, Chopin wrote bars 83-112 less precisely than equivalent bars 1-30, which is proven by, e.g., the incomplete and inconsistent pedalling and dynamics (cf. the commentary concerning bars 83-90 and 87-94); therefore, the exact repetition of the line of melody in bar 91 in the described bar might have been written due to inattention (this kind of temporary distraction happened to Chopin in bar 96, where one can see a deletion of the 1st triplet in the L.H., which was repeated by mistake after bar 95; cf. commentary concerning bar 121); such a mistake becomes even more probable if the version with d2-ewas the original one.
