Fingering in EE

No fingering in FE (→GE)

..

In the main text, we give the fingering written in pencil to FES (with one added digit for more clarity), coming most probably from Chopin. A different fingering, probably coming from Chopin, is in FESf. The poorly legible annotation in FEO may be interpreted in a variety of ways – we suggest these interpretations that lead to a pianistically natural fingering as variants.

The fingering in EE comes from the editor and it is inauthentic.

b. 267-268

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

f1 & f tied in A (→FCGE) & FESf

f1 repeated, f tied in FE

f1 tied, f repeated in EE

..

In FE b. 267 closes the line of the text. There are no ties of the R.H. minims, f-f1, therein, whereas in b. 268 it is only the tie of f that was finished. These are patent mistakes. EE ignored that partial tie while adding a tie of f1, probably on the basis of comparison with an analogous place in b. 271-272, where FE has only the tie of f1. All necessary ties in the discussed bars were added in FESf.

b. 273-274

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

E & g tied in AGE2 (→GE3) & FESf

E repeated in FC (→GE1)

g repeated in FE (→EE)

..

The omitted ties in FE (→EE) and FC (→GE1) must be mistakes. The tie of E was added in GE2 (→GE3), most probably on the basis of comparison with the analogous places. A tie next to g was added only just in FESf.

b. 372-373

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

Tie to f1 in A (→FC), GE2 (→GE3) & FESf

No tie in FE (→EE)

Slur c1-e1 in GE1

..

The missing tie of f1 is a patent mistake, although in FE it was overlooked, while in GE1 – distorted, since it was interpreted as a slur combining the crotchets of the middle voice, c1 and e1. The correct version was introduced in subsequent GE; the tie was also added in FESf.

The  raising a3 to a3, overlooked in A (→FE), was added in FC (→GE) and EE. The mark was also added in FESf.
