Issues : Annotations in FED
b. 319
|
composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt I
..
The fingering digits are written in FED in such a way that they can refer both to the right and to the left hand. According to us, the first possibility is much more likely – someone working on the 1st mov. of the Concerto with Chopin would not have had problems with the fingering of a short fragment of the chromatic scale. In turn, in the less typical figuration in the R.H., an indication could have warned of, e.g. using the 3-2 fingering (to avoid the 1st finger on a black key). category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Differences between sources |

The fingering of FEH complements the Chopinesque entry from FED; its authenticity seems to be highly likely. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Annotations in teaching copies , Annotations in FED , Annotations in FEH |

The 1st finger on the 4th semiquaver is almost certainly a mistake of FE (→EE,GE1→GE2) – the digit was most probably supposed to concern the next note (d1). The mistake was corrected in FED and FEH; an appropriate change was introduced also in GE3. In the latter and in FEH, in the further part of the passage, a few digits were added, clarifying the fingering indicated by Chopin at the beginning of the bar. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Annotations in teaching copies , Errors in FE , Annotations in FED , GE revisions , Annotations in FEH |

The fingering of FEH determines one of possible continuations of the Chopinesque entry in FED, whereas Fontana's fingering in FE – a different one. In the main text, we take into consideration the entry of FED only, defining the most important element of the passage's fingering – the thumb under. As an alternative solution, we suggest a combination of the fingering of FED with three digits of FEH, which could have been entered by Chopin. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Annotations in teaching copies , EE revisions , Annotations in FED , Differences in fingering , Annotations in FEH |
